Gran Canaria wildfire burns huge expanse and forces 1,000 to flee homes

A huge wildfire raging in Gran Canaria has burnt through more 2,000 acres of land and forced 1,000 residents to flee their homes.

Firefighters used planes and helicopters to fight the fierce blaze, with around 200 of them springing into action to tackle the fire about 20 miles from the capital Las Palmas.

Police said they believe the fire was started by someone using a soldering iron and a 55-year-old man was arrested on Saturday.

The fire poses a threat to several towns as well as the Tamadaba national park on the west of the island, authorities previously said on Twitter.

It has so far ripped through 2,470 acres, equivalent to more than 1,800 football pitches, on the Spanish Island, which is one of the Canary Islands.

Witness Carla Rodriguez described the scene as "one of the most painful images I've seen in my life".

Spain's military emergency unit, that specialises in fighting fires, has also been deployed to the area.

Spanish state broadcaster RTVE said the evacuations were a precaution and no homes have been burnt so far.

Televised images showed a fire consuming the hillside near a town overnight.
