Graham Coughlan comes in for criticism at Mansfield Town as Bristol Rovers complaints return

Former Bristol Rovers boss Graham Coughlan is coming under increasing pressure from Mansfield Town fans as they search for their first League Two win of the season.

Coughlan controversially left Rovers last season when they were riding high in League One, dropping down a division to move to Mansfield and return closer to his family.

Yet his time at the Stags has not gone according to plan just yet.

Four league wins from 20 matches gives Coughlan a win percentage of just 20 per cent.

That has led to criticism from some Mansfield fans, particularly after a summer transfer spending spree that saw the likes of former Gas captain Ollie Clarke move to the One Call Stadium.

Whilst calls for Coughlan to leave the club to be sacked appear to be premature, the same criticisms that came from Rovers fans when he was in charge at the Gas appear to be rearing their head again.

Similarly to when he took charge of Rovers on a caretaker business following Darrell Clarke's departure, Coughlan did appear to improve Mansfield's defence after being appointed Stags boss.

Yet a lack of goals this season has cost them, with just four goals from four matches so far this season, which has led to them losing three league matches by a single goal.

It has led to criticism of Coughlan's football from some fans on social media.

"We have good enough players in my opinion but the style of football is worse than under John Dempster," one commented.

Another fan simply commented that Rovers fans were right about Coughlan's style of football.

Saturday's goalless draw against Stevenage saw Coughlan pleased his side managed to keep just a second clean sheet of the season after conceding late goals.

Yet he admitted that negativity had crept in around the club.

He told Mansfield's website: “We’ve let one or two crazy moments and we’ve had one or two daft scenarios.

“For a small percentage of the last five minutes I did think ‘here we go’ but the lads dispelled that and put it to bed.

“Hopefully now, we can dispel the ghost that, as players, they do run around your heads. Hopefully we’ve got rid of that tag and we can push on from here.

“It was difficult trying to break a red wall down. Whether we like it or not, teams will come here and bank up, consider coming away from here with a point as a good result.

“I would’ve liked a win, as there has been a little bit of negativity around. Hopefully we can go into Bradford having picked up a bit of confidence today.”
