Graham Alexander is new Motherwell manager as Keith Lasley joins backroom team

Graham Alexander is the new Motherwell manager.

The former Scotland international, who won 40 caps, is the man the Fir Park board have decided will be Stephen Robinson 's successor.

Alexander has had previous spells in charge at Salford City, Scunthorpe and Fleetwood Town and was also caretaker at Preston.

The 49-year-old was successfully interviewed earlier this week, and he will bring in his long-term assistant Chris Lucketti as his assistant.

Motherwell are in free fall and sit second bottom of the Scottish Premiership, and the Fir Park board hope Alexander can come in and steady the ship.

Keith Lasley is one of four people being interviewed for the top job at Motherwell (Alan Harvey/SNS Group)

He has previously guided Fleetwood Town to promotion, Salford City into the Football League and also led Scunthorpe United to the play-offs.

Former captain and caretaker boss Keith Lasley was interviewed for the job but the Steelmen decided to go in a different direction.

Lasley will remain a part of the new manager’s plan as assistant.

Motherwell also interviewed ex-St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright and former Leeds and Sunderland manager Simon Grayson.

His first game in charge will be against St Mirren in Paisley weekend.
