What’s new: Another former senior official of China Railway Corp. came under investigation by the country’s top anti-graft body for suspected severe violations of discipline and law, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said Friday.
Chen Boshi, former deputy director of the Transportation Bureau and former director of the Vehicle Department of China Railway Corp., became the second senior official of China’s railway system to be investigated after the downfall of Sheng Guangzu, the former Communist Party chief and general manager at the state railway operator in March.
Chen worked with Sheng for 4½ years before he retired in 2015. Zhang Shuguang, former director of the Transportation Bureau of the Ministry of Railways, who had worked with Chen at the ministry, was sentenced to death for bribery in 2014.
It is unclear what allegations are being investigated, but the railway sector has long been the focus of graft busters.
The background: Chen, 67, is a railway veteran who worked in the system for 43 years. He joined the Ministry of Railways at age 17. Over the years, he was promoted from engineer to deputy director of the Transportation Bureau at the ministry.
In 2013, when the Ministry of Railways was broken up and separated into China Railway Corp. and the National Railway Administration, Chen acted as deputy director of the Transportation Bureau and director of the Vehicle Department of China Railway Corp. until his retirement.
