Graeme Souness on Newcastle United's new gem and why Steve Bruce has found a blueprint

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness believes Steve Bruce may have found a gem in Matty Longstaff.

The youngster was handed his first start in the Premier League by Bruce against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, and capped off an his impressive performance by netting his side's winner in the second half.

The victory was a much-needed one for Bruce and his side following last weekend's 5-0 hammering away at Leicester City, and also lifted them out of the drop zone.

And Souness believes the way the Magpies played against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side could be their blueprint for the rest campaign.

"Well he is one of the good guys and you won't hear anyone say anything bad about Steve," Souness told Sky Sports post-match.

"I'm delighted for him. We talked about the first game at Tottenham where they dig out that result and you're thinking he's found a way of playing.

"It was a similar performance today. They didn't have a lot of the ball, but they won the game and I think that is the way forward for him. He realises he has a group of players who can defend when fully concentrated and they are capable of nicking things.

"And he has maybe found a gem in the fella in midfield."
