Graeme Mathie opens up on Rangers and Kilmarnock interest as he's appointed Hibs sporting director

Graeme Mathie has explained why the vision of new owner Ron Gordon convinced him to remain at Easter Road.

The recruitment chief was reported to be a candidate to join new Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson in a role at Ibrox.

Kilmarnock , where Mathie's father was a player, were also keen to bring him to Rugby Park after the departure of Steve Clarke.

Asked on Hibs TV about the interest from other clubs, he responded:  "The most important thing to say is that I was never looking to leave the club.

"It's a club where I've felt genuinely trusted, valued and supported to do the job that I have been doing and these three things are really important to me.

"It was a good opportunity to take a real step back and consider the job here and I wouldn't have taken it if I didn't think I could make a difference and help to take it forward.

"I had a really good conversation with Leeann and Ron and he outlined what he wanted. His energy is fantastic and his vision is great and it's something that I have bought into and want to be a part of going forward."

Chief Executive Leeann Dempster was thrilled to agree a deal with a man she was desperate to keep at the club following the announcement of George Craig's retirement from his role as Head of Football Operations.

She said: “We are delighted to announce Graeme as our first Sporting Director.

“It’s important that we build on the success we have had in recent years and the foundations that have been put in place. Graeme has been central to those achievements and we look forward to seeing him develop in his new role.

“Ron’s arrival is creating a fresh impetus, with a lot of work going on. We are more determined than ever to be successful within Scottish football, to enjoy regular exposure to European football and deliver a team and a club that supporters can be proud of.

“We all have a part to play in that.”
