GPT-5 Thinking is Coming to Perplexity Max Subscribers

Perplexity is setting up the stage to bring GPT-5 Thinking for its Max-tier users. If we go by the latest report from TestingCatalog, GPT-5 Thinking will first roll out to Max users and show up in the reasoning models list. While the company has yet to officially announce the feature, internal tests suggest the launch could be just around the corner.

Perplexity already offers reasoning-focused options, including o3 and o3 Pro, and now it looks like OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 Thinking model is going to join this list. However, the best part is that the already existing models are said to remain available, so the current workflows remain unaffected.

Unfortunately, there’s no indication that Pro-tier users will get access, even though GPT-5 itself is already available there. But, historically, Perplexity has always reserved its most advanced reasoning models for Max subscribers, making early access one of the main perks of the higher-tier plan.

Along with the GPT-5 Thinking the company is also said to be making minor interface changes. The leaked internal builds show tweaks to the task system and the addition of a notifications tab, both of which suggest the company is gearing up for a more streamlined user experience. These adjustments are consistent with Perplexity’s strategy of layering in usability improvements ahead of major feature launches.

Perplexity has leaned heavily on its Max subscription to deliver the most cutting-edge capabilities first. By tying GPT-5 Thinking to this tier, the company is doubling down on its strategy of giving power users exclusive access to the latest AI advancements.

While GPT-5 Thinking is the biggest development on the horizon, the AI giant has also been adding other features. Recently, it introduced price alerts for Perplexity Finance on desktop and mobile web, available to both Pro and Max users in India. Which unlike standard alerts that come with AI-generated explanations of why a stock price moved, powered by Perplexity’s search technology. The feature will soon roll out to mobile apps and, eventually, to free users as well.
