GPs give Ireland second wave warning after worrying trend emerges in last few days

GPs are warning that people are not presenting with Covid-19 symptoms early enough in recent days.

GPBuddy, which tracks new cases per GP, has recorded an "uptick" in cases in the last week.

A spokesperson said: "Sharp uptick in cases reported yesterday (avg number of cases per responding GP). Need to watch this space carefully."

Data from their surveys show that two Dublin 5 GPs both recorded four new cases of the coronavirus on July 6.

Dublin doctor Ray Walley tweeted that the "next 10 days will be a worry" with fears the latest phase reopening could spark a second wave.

No new deaths were recorded in Ireland on Tuesday but a further 24 cases were.

After scenes outside Dublin pub's at the weekend, GP Dr Maitiu O Tuathail said that a second wave was only a matter of weeks away.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio One’s Brendan O’Connor show this morning, Dr Maitiu O Tuathail said: "After last night, I really think we’re weeks away from a second wave."

The doctor added it was a "slap in the face to those who’ve broken their backs to keep the country working".

Ireland is currently due to move to phase four of the reopening plan on July 20 which would see all pubs allowed open but the Taoiseach warned that could be delayed.

The Fianna Fail leader said: "We have to put public health first. That is the overarching issue.

"The only way we can get the economy back is if we keep Covid-19 down.

"Any change to this would be a disaster for the country.

"There is an obligation on everyone to behave."
