The Alcohol Control Committee is reviewing regulations to tighten restrictions on self-service alcohol dispensers by expanding the legal definition of a convenience store to close loopholes exploited by some retailers.
Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat, who chaired the committee meeting on Monday, said the review was prompted by changes in retail business models that have allowed some alcohol sellers to avoid registering as convenience stores and circumvent existing restrictions.
The committee is considering broadening the legal definition of a convenience store to cover more types of retail outlets, he said.
Since 2018, self-service alcohol dispensers have been prohibited in convenience stores as part of efforts to reduce alcohol consumption.
Mr Pattana said the committee unanimously agreed the ban should remain in place, describing it as an important public health measure.
He said self-service alcohol dispensers are often located near residential areas and educational institutions, while the amount of alcohol dispensed is more difficult to monitor than with bottled or canned beverages.
"The definition of a convenience store is more complex than it appears, so we need to review it in greater detail to prevent any potential loopholes," he said.
"We have reaffirmed our position that self-service alcohol dispensers will remain subject to strict controls in the interest of public health."
Mr Pattana said the committee is expected to submit its recommendations within the next few months.
