Government to decide if it will get rid of 'obsolete' 1p and 2p coins this week

An announcement on the future of 1p and 2p coins is due this week - a year after the Chancellor hinted copper change's could be numbered.

The results of a consultation into the future of cash are set to be revealed imminently, the Treasury has confirmed.

They come a year after signs indicated the Treasury could consider scrapping 1p and 2p coins - before a Government spokesperson rebuffed reports that Britain could follow the likes of Australia, Canada and Sweden by getting rid of its smallest change.

The Treasury has declined to comment on rumours copper coins could be withdrawn, but it confirmed the results of the review will be "announced shortly", Mirror Money reports .

The Mail On Sunday reports a source told the newspaper the penny will not be scrapped.

Last year, the Treasury hinted the coppers could be taken out of circulation, with Chancellor Philip Hammond branding the coins as 'obsolete', as more and more consumers opt to use cashless payment methods.

A Treasury report found six in 10 of UK 1p and 2p are used once, before being stored in a jar. The same report said one in 12 copper coins are thrown in the bin.

During his 2018 Spring Statement, Mr Hammond announced a consultation would seek views on the future of the penny and two pence coins, as part of a review into how Britons use cash. That was followed by the Theresa May's spokesperson saying there were 'no proposals' to scrap the coins.
