A Government of national unity could be ready to oust Boris Johnson unless he delays Brexit , the Lib Dems claimed today.
Opposition leaders agreed to shelve plans for a no-confidence vote in the Prime Minister amid fears it could make a no-deal departure from the EU ore likely.
Triggering such a move would “play into Boris Johnson’s hands”, warned Lib Dem chief Jo Swinson.
Instead, whips from across the Opposition parties will meet to “plan out different scenarios, look at different options, including the possibility of an insurance option of a Government of national unity”, she said, following talks with counterparts.
That would take over if the Tory leader refused to obey the law and ask Brussels for an extension, with the UK set to leave the bloc on October 31.
Potential PMs in such an administration include Tory veteran Ken Clarke, Labours Harriet Harman and former Foreign Secretary Dame Margaret Beckett.
Meanwhile, MPs hope to try and force the Government - whose senior ministers are at the Tory conference in Manchester until Wednesday - to reveal a set of documents around Brexit planning.
They plan to use a parliamentary device to uncover files relating to Operation Kingfisher, which deals with business readiness; Operation Snow Bunting, which deals with police preparedness; and Operation Black Swan which deals with disaster planning.
Meanwhile, a Treasury Minister has been forced to the Commons by Labour to be grilled about whether City speculators cashed in on Brexit.
