Government extends last date for filing ITR till March 15

NEW DELHI: The income tax (I-T) department on Tuesday extended the deadline for filing returns for financial year 2020-21 (assessment year 2021-22) till March 15, 2022.

The decision comes in wake of the difficulties faced by taxpayers in filing tax returns due to the prevailing Covid situation as well as in electric filing of various reports of audit.

In addition, last date for submitting tax audit report and transfer pricing audit report has been extended till February 15. Earlier, this deadline was January 15, 2022.

Earlier this week, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) had submitted a representation to Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman J B Mohapatra seeking time till March 31 for filing tax audit reports without penalties, citing the coronavirus pandemic situation and "consistent technical glitches" being faced in using the new I-T portal.

Nearly 5.89 crore tax returns for the 2020-21 fiscal were filed on the new e-filing portal till December 31 deadline, the I-T department had said.

Of this, more than 46.11 lakh ITRs were filed on the last date or December 31 alone.
