Widespread flood damage across Goulburn Mulwaree Council has forced the municipality to apply for a second round of state government disaster relief this year, with the total clean-up bill expected to cost more than $3 million.
Flooding across Goulburn Mulwaree Council last weekend has caused over $3 million in road and infrastructure damage, according to initial estimates.
More than 100mm of rain fell during the August 8-9 weekend, compounding the damage inflicted by widespread flooding and bushfires at the beginning of the year.
"Road shoulders got washed out, causeways were washed away, draining structures got washed out and filled with sediment amounting to localised damming", the council's director of operations Matt O'Rourke said. "We got more water this time and it was equally widespread."
However, it was less intense than the February flooding, he said.
Council awarded a $302,192.81 contract to Coopers Earthmoving to repair Jerrara Road at Tuesday night's meeting, as part of a $7.3 million damage repair bill from floods and fires earlier in the year.
An additional contract had earlier been awarded to Divall's Earthmoving for repair work to Bungendore Road, at a similar cost.
"The initial feedback from our assessments is that the damage from last weekend is probably in the vicinity of half of what we experienced in February," Mr O'Rourke said.
Projects across the local government area will range from minor works around $20,000 to major $500,000 repairs, with Transport for New South Wales aiming to complete all works within two years.
Most roads that had been initially closed had been reopened again.
"However, the repairs that have been done thus far are more of a temporary nature until these longer-term repairs are completed," Mr O'Rourke said.
