Gordon Brown warns Boris Johnson’s no-deal Brexit mess will put lives in danger

Boris Johnson is putting lives at risk by dragging the UK to the brink of a no-deal Brexit, Gordon Brown warned yesterday.

The former prime minister claimed crashing out of the European Union on October 31 would be an act of “self-harm” that would mean supplies of vital medicines could not be guaranteed.

His comments were echoed by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who accused Prime Minister Johnson of being “reckless” and “making up” his Brexit policy as he goes along.

They hit out after Johnson conceded that reaching an agreement for the UK to leave the EU was “touch and go”.

The PM previously insisted it was a “million to one chance” that the UK would be forced into a no-deal Brexit.

Brown said MPs should seize control of the House of Commons agenda for a day to pass a law making Brexit conditional on the production of an impact report.

Asked if he believed Johnson could guarantee medical supplies, he said: “I don’t think he can.

“I have looked at the words of the commercial director of the NHS who says there is going to be a significant shortage in the first three months and a serious shortage in the first few weeks.

“Nobody can tell us now what the level of disruption could be.”

Sturgeon claimed the PM is “behaving in a kind of carefree, shrug of the shoulders, reckless manner”.

She added: “He’s making it up as he goes along.

“That’s not acceptable because the consequences of this are so serious for our economy, for our society, for the livelihoods and living standards of people the length and breadth of the UK.”
