The congressional testimony of victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was so compelling that it caused one congresswoman to have a panic attack and tearfully flee the proceedings.
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-South Carolina, was seen leaving the closed-door meeting of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Tuesday, USA TODAY reported. Mace said that she was having "a very difficult time listening to their stories."
"Full blown panic attack. Sweating. Hyperventilating. Shaking. I can't breathe," Mace wrote on social media.
In February, Mace made a speech on the floor of the House in which she accused her former fiancé and three other men of rape. The men have denied the accusations.
"I feel the immense pain of how hard all victims are fighting for themselves because we know absolutely no one will fight for us," Mace, who is running for governor in South Carolina, wrote Sept. 2, according to USA TODAY. "GOD BLESS ALL SURVIVORS."
The House Oversight Committee began investigating the Epstein case after the Justice Department released a statement in July that provoked public criticism. The statement said that the disgraced financier did not have a "client list" related to his trafficking of underage girls. The department also reaffirmed that Epstein's death in 2019 was a suicide, claims that members of President Donald Trump's MAGA base have heavily contended.
