The designs for Googong's second public school have been unveiled as the township expands apace.
The as-yet-unnamed school for 650 children is planned to open at the start of term in 2028. It will join the existing Googong Public School and a high school under construction slated to open next year.
The NSW government said the new school would have classrooms and shared common areas. There would be a hall, canteen and library plus office space for staff.
"Googong is one of the fastest growing communities in the state," the NSW Minister for Education, Prue Car said.
"And the Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring local families in growing areas have access to public schools close to home."
Neighbouring Queanbeyan, Googong has expanded by about 14 per cent a year in recent years.
It has a very young population: on one estimate more than a quarter of the people there are under the age of 14.
At the turn of this century, Googong was bush and sheep paddocks. Planning for its transformation started in the early 2000s.
Googong has been devloped by two companies in a joint venture, Peet Limited and Mirvac. Construction started in 2012 and the first Googongians (as the developers call them) moved in in 2014.
Within three years, the population had grown to around 3500 people. In the census of 2021, that had risen to 6224. Today, it's estimated at around 9500 plus.
Googong's Development Director Glen Frew estimated it would reach 18,000 to 18,500 in around 10 years' time. He welcomed the new school.
"It's great. It's a big part of our community," he said.
As the town's grown, so have the facilities, turning a set of homes and roads into a community.
Fast food outlets KFC and McDonald's opened at the end of 2025 and earlier this year, along with a 7-Eleven petrol station.
A $25 million hotel and entertainment venue is being built, with a planned opening later this year. The project is being done jointly by Googong's two developers along with the Royal Hotel in Queanbeyan.
"The development proposal is for a two-storey family-friendly hotel which includes bistro, lounge, bar, beer garden, kids' play area, function rooms, sports bar, and gaming room," the Googong Pub Trust, which is behind the project, said on its website.
A Coles is on the way, along with 20 shops in the retail precinct, "with the centre scheduled to open in 2028", the developers said.
Mr Frew from the developers' said that they would build also build a library.
