Google executive to join McDonald's board

Jan. 28--McDonald's named Google executive Margo Georgiadis as a member of its board Wednesday, a move that highlights the restaurant chain's efforts to improve its digital connections with customers.

"As we head into 2015, Margo brings unique capabilities and additional dimensions to our Board," Chairman Andrew McKenna said in a statement.

Georgiadis, 50, is president of Americas at Google, overseeing its business in North America and Latin America. She previously worked at Groupon, Discover Financial Services, and McKinsey and Co., according to McDonald's.

The world's largest restaurant company has been focused on improving in areas such as digital marketing and social media for months. It opened a digital office in the San Francisco area in May and said in late 2014 it planned to open another digital office in downtown Chicago as a way to attract top tech talent.

McDonald's has signed a lease for a 12,000-square-foot office space in River North, Crain's Chicago Business reported Thursday. The office is located on the top floor of an office building on the corner of Hubbard and Orleans, according to Crain's.

The company eventually plans to have 200 to 250 digital employees globally by 2015, Senior Executive Vice President and Global Brand Officer Steve Easterbrook said late last year.
