A man who stepped in to rescue a woman from a gang attack was stabbed and beaten on a city street.
The good Samaritan, in his 30s, was knifed and battered with a crowbar after he saw a woman appearing to be attacked by a group of men.
But as he intervened and tried to protect the stranger, he was viciously attacked himself.
He suffered serious injuries, though police said they were not life threatening.
The incident happened in Johnson Road, Erdington, on Saturday night, May 16, BirminghamLive reports.
Police were pictured making door-to-door enquiries and CCTV trawls in adjoining Dean Road in the wake of the stabbing.
No arrests had been made and police urged witnesses to come forward.
A statement from West Midlands Police read: "A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked by a group of men in Johnson Road, Birmingham just before 8pm last night.
"The man had intervened when he saw a woman appearing to be attacked by the group.
"The good Samaritan, in his 30s, was stabbed and beaten with a crowbar.
"Fortunately his injuries, although serious, are not thought to be life threatening or life changing.
"Our officers are trawling CCTV and have stepped up patrols in the area to search for the offenders.
