Kate Garraway has said how 'different' husband Derek Draper looks in an update on his health condition.
A glimmer of hope has emerged as the 52-year-old author has been able to open his eyes a few times after being placed into an induced coma in March with coronavirus.
Kate said that although Derek has since fought off the deadly virus, his body has been significantly damaged and he may never recover.
The Good Morning Britain star has also revealed that her husband has lost a “huge amount of weight” during his health battle.
Although Kate and their family can’t visit him in hospital, she explained that Derek looks “so different” on FaceTime after the nurse shaved off his beard.
Speaking to Hello! magazine, she said: "Derek's lost a huge amount of weight and when the nurse shaved him because his beard had grown so long, he looked so different..
"They'd [their children] never seen him without stubble or a beard before. During their chats, they tell him what they've been doing, and their sense of humour often shines through”.
The former political advisor remains verbally unresponsive and doctors have warned that his return home remains “very uncertain”.
Kate added: "In my heart, I feel that he understands me. I reassure him that he's doing brilliantly and not to worry; that the doctors are doing everything they can and we're going to bring him home soon.”
Despite the trauma over the last few months, the breakfast TV presenter is set to return to Good Morning Britain, starting with an interview on Wednesday before Piers Morgan's break for the summer.
Kate and Derek married in 2005 and have two children.
