Gone Fishing star Bob Mortimer reveals how he accidentally set his house on fire

Bob Mortimer has revealed how he set his house on fire after lighting fireworks indoors.

The Gone Fishing star says he didn't realise the instructions on the side of the box were to be taken seriously.

In his recently-published autobiography And Away... , the 62-year-old said he "managed to convince himself they were for indoor use".

Bob was nine when his curiosity got the better of him, and he took a match from the mantel and lit one firework.

He writes: "Needless to say, it was a big mistake.

"A cascade of sparks fell down into the open box of fireworks and the contents started to fizzle and ignite."

Young Bob grabbed the box and ran through the kitchen, watching in horror as things exploded across the floor.

Once it was over, or so he thought, he got to work scrubbing burn marks from the kitchen - but then he heard loud bangs coming from the living room.

He continues: "When I walked back in, I was met with a wall of flames."

Thankfully, nobody was hurt, and his mum later said it was "probably a blessing."

The tale was also told during an episode of BBC's Would I Lie To You?, on which Bob is a regular panellist.

Viewers were shocked when it emerged he was actually telling the truth.

Bob has most recently been on our screens with Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, with his long-time friend Paul Whitehouse.

The wholesome show presents "two friends, beautiful places and a good natter".

Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing will return for an hour-long Christmas Special, set to air on BBC Two next month.
