Golden Globes 2011: Red carpet fashion - in pictures

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman
A zillion fashion points to Viktor & Rolf for creating this beautiful rose silk draped number, which makes Portman's bump look especially elegant. But minus half a zillion for the ugly rose addition plonked in the middle. Less couture, more 80s chocolate box

Julianne Moore
Moore is surging ahead in the red carpet league in this bubblegum pink Lanvin number. The draping and the assymetric sleeve action works and the semi-covered jewels are a neat trick. Colour blocking with a twist of awards-appropriate sexiness. Slam-dunk

A panic choice surely? The colour is draining, the waterfall side seams are unflattering, the giant daisies are bizarre. No wonder she looks like she's screaming

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Emma Stone
Emma Stone
Perfect example of a fashion long shot unexpectedly coming home with a medal. Before this fab peachy minimal Calvin Klein Collection dress Emma Stone was a shoulder shrug, next awards season she's a sit up and pay attention. Good grey/champagne hair too

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Catherine Zeta Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones Clearly got the 'this-season-it's-green' memo. But the ballgown shape of her Monique L'Hullier is a fashion-fail. Mainly because it can be described as a ballgown. Wince

Golden globes fashion: Actress Helena Bonham Carter arrives on
Helena Bonham Carter
Sigh. Kind of bored of this 'let's give HBC props because she flies the bonkers British flag' default position. The Westwood dress doesn't offend but the mismatched shoes are a terrible idea. They look like they are from Bertie (fine for any other occasion but not for the red carpet) and if it's a sartorial in-joke sadly it hasn't worked

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman
Really thought we were done with beige columns, but apparently we're not. Nice neat waist bow but mostly a fashion flatline

Her fringe is too long which somehow fools you into thinking that the dress is too long. Plus the hair is too rock for the lightness of the tulle and the jewels. An okayish dress brought down by bossy hair

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton
Not a surprise at all that Swinton chose something from the Jil Sander runway. It is a dress of two halves, so no point complaining that the champagne couture-esque skirt fights with the everydayness of the white blouse because it's meant to. But for those not schooled in the fashion theory, does it look great? Yes it properly does

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie
High fives to Jolie in Versace. The super length and the skinny sleeves tread the sexy/demure line gracefully. The Swarovsky crystals launch the snooker table green dress firmly into the style VIP section. A bar setter this season

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion Halle Berry
Halle Berry
This is a bit of M&S corsetry with a bit of ballet tulle tucked down the waist. True, ballet is in, but vamp is sooo dead

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum
This Marc Jacobs number is meant to look all Studio 54 sexy. Maybe it would work on a dancefloor next to Warhol, but on the red carpet on Klum it looks like a customised kaftan

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, January Jones
January Jones
Love the fringing, love the colour blocking, but the major V neckline on this Versace number trips her up before the finish. Bombshell cleavage is just wrong this season

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Christina Hendricks
Christina Hendricks
Red in red on red. Like it in theory, but not sure where the hair ends and the neck ruff starts

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Leighton Meester
Leighton Meester
The dirty dishwater colour and the puffy sleeves shouldn't work, but the Gossip Girl pulls it off by dint of the way she's wearing the long Burberry dress as though she's wearing a short dress. The thigh split helps. As do the showgirl shoes and the mini deco bag, which turn frump into fresh

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway
The combination of Hathaway in Armani Prive could have been a real eye-glazer. But the old-time glamour of the big shoulders, the fact that it's backless and the long sleeves (trend alert) make it an unexpected winner

Livia Firth
Limp. Slate grey and strapless feels a bit three years ago. It doesn't appear to fit properly, and is that a clutch or a Dulux paint roller?

Golden globes fashion: Golden Globes fashion, Eva Longoria
Eva Longoria
Could a dress look any more out of step with fashion? It's plain but not at all minimalist, too tight, too long, too fishtaily and it's begging for some sleeves. Please go and talk to your mate Beckham while it's still early enough in the awards season to recover
