God of War TV series reportedly derailed by on-set injury, leaving Kratos to be recast

Prime Video’s God of War series will be re-casting the lead of Kratos after a freak injury on-set last month, according to multiple reports.

TMZ reported yesterday that Kratos actor Ryan Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt while filming at the end of June, and rather than wait for the actor to recover, the studios involved will find a new actor to play the angry Spartan, according to Deadline.

Hurst has already undergone surgery for the injury, but recovery time is likely several months. Prime Video has decided to find a new actor for the role in his stead, and will have to re-shoot several episodes from scratch with the new Kratos, meaning the show’s production has been severely stunted.

It’s an utterly devastating blow for Hurst, who spent months working out to put on about 40lbs of muscle for the physically demanding role. He will now likely spend the rest of the year recovering and rehabilitating instead of leading an all-star production of one of gaming’s biggest and most recognizable IPs. I feel terrible for the actor who portrayed an unforgettable character named Opie in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, along with voicing Thor in the God of War Ragnarök PS5 game.

The star-studded cast has many, including myself, excited for the adaptation, regardless of the lukewarm reaction to the first set photo released earlier this year, seen above. The show’s actors include newcomer youngster Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

Deadline says that the new timetable for the show includes preparation beginning next month, and a return to production in the middle of October.
