Prime Video's live-action adaptation of "God of War" has hit a major setback as production is forced to recast the role of Kratos after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious injury while filming a stunt.
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the decision after determining Hurst would not be able to return to set in time.
'God of War' Series Recasts Ryan Hurst as Kratos
According to Deadline, the studios made the difficult call to move forward with a new actor rather than wait for Hurst's recovery, given how physically demanding the role is.
Production halted immediately after the injury and remains on pause, with Deadline reporting that the studios are now targeting mid-October to resume shooting in Vancouver.
Sources told Deadline that four episodes had already been fully completed before the injury occurred, and those episodes will now need to be reshot entirely with whoever takes over as the new Kratos.
No replacement has been announced yet, and it remains unclear how far into production the search for a new lead currently stands.
Hurst was announced as the lead for the "God of War" series at the start of the year, taking on the role of Kratos for Amazon's adaptation of the long-running PlayStation franchise.
On-Set Injury Leaves Ryan Hurst Unavailable
The injury was first reported by TMZ, which detailed that Hurst tore his bicep while filming a stunt sequence, an injury that requires surgery to repair.
Recovery from that type of procedure typically takes between four and six months, but given the intense physical demands of playing Kratos, Hurst may have needed even longer to reach the fitness level the role requires.
Sony and Amazon had reportedly hoped to have the 50-year-old actor back on set by mid-August, but the timeline ultimately proved too tight for production to wait.
Hurst had reportedly put on 40 pounds of muscle while preparing for the role, making the setback especially unfortunate given the amount of physical preparation already invested before filming began.
There has been no public statement yet from Hurst himself regarding the recasting decision.
Prime Video Reportedly Wants to Film Series
Despite the setback, Deadline reports that Amazon and Sony still intend to shoot two seasons of "God of War" back-to-back, suggesting the studios remain committed to the project's original scope even with the recasting delay.
An official image of Kratos alongside Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, remains the only look released so far at the live-action adaptation, shared by Amazon back in February.

With production paused until at least mid-October, fans will need to wait longer for further updates on who will step into the role of Kratos and when the series will ultimately move forward.
