God of War Ragnarok wasn’t ‘good’ three months ago, says dev

God of War Ragnarok is already one of the highest-rated games of 2022, sitting at an incredible 94 on reviews aggregate Metacritic. However, director Eric Williams was pretty worried about its reception not long before launch.

During an interview with GQ, Williams spoke at length about how the development team stays motivated. Particularly with fan expectations sky-high after God of War‘s brilliant revival in 2018.

“When you work with people that are at the apex of what they do, you’re going to get magic,” Williams said. “I just came from a room with those people. All I could say to them was, ‘Thank you.’ They were freaking out three months ago, ‘Holy crap, the game’s not good. What are we going to do?’ I can’t even imagine how they feel today. I wish I had a time machine to go back and feel like that.”

It turns out that God of War Ragnarok is pretty good, much to the surprise of nobody (aside from Sony Santa Monica’s staff, it seems).

He also went into some detail as to why this saga is only two games rather than a trilogy. Apparently, the team had no trouble readjusting narrative bits for a two-parter.

“In terms of the story, it didn’t scale back at all,” Williams explains. “That was something we [100 percemt] believed and the team believed in, and we pushed as hard as we could. Some things got readjusted and reconfigured for pacing.”
