Goalkicker Breust extends Hawks contract

Hawthorn AFL veteran Luke Breust has opted to sign a one-year extension instead of eyeing a move elsewhere, recommitting to the Hawks until the end of 2024.

The triple-premiership Hawk was already contracted for 2023 but has added another year to his deal after leading Hawthorn's goalkicking with 40 majors in 2022.

The Hawks' focus will now likely turn to securing classy goalkicker Jack Gunston, who booted 32 goals in an injury-hit 2022 but is yet to sign a contract for next season and beyond.

Breust's commitment ensures important experience will remain on Hawthorn's otherwise young list.

The 31-year-old has kicked 481 goals in 260 games, all at Hawthorn, and is the most experienced player on their AFL list following Ben McEvoy and Liam Shiels' retirements.

"Luke's value to the club is immeasurable. While he is still playing at a high level on-field, his willingness to educate and mentor our younger players has been equally valuable," Hawthorn list boss Mark McKenzie said.

"We're very pleased that he has been quick to confirm his commitment to the club's future, which we think is a broader reflection of how the playing group feels about the direction we are going.

"As a three-time premiership player, Luke has already made an immense impact on the club with his own achievements in his own right.

"But he is just as determined to now help to build towards our next period of success."
