Blake Govers, one of Australian hockey's great marksmen, has struck a landmark goal as the Kookaburras continued their perfect start to their 2026 World Cup campaign.
The insatiable 30-year-old serial scorer Govers, who averages more than a goal a game after more than 11 years in international hockey, converted the winning penalty stroke in Australia's 100th World Cup match, a hard-earned 1-0 win over Spain at Wavre's Belfius Hockey Arena on Tuesday.
After the 3-1 opening group victory over Ireland, it looked as if Australia might be denied in a tight, physical affair, dominated largely by defences.
Govers himself was denied when trying to put the Kookaburras ahead one of two early penalty corners, and the Spanish defence were tigerish in breaking down opportunities with their edge-of-the-D tackling.
When Australia hit the post through Ky Willott in the third quarter, it felt as if it might not be the Kookaburras' day, but as the stalemate continued into the fourth quarter, Nathan Ephraums was fouled by clumsy Spanish defending in the 47th minute, giving up a penalty stroke.
Govers, in his 181st senior international, made no mistake as he slotted home in the top-left corner -- goal No.253 of his stellar career -- leaving him to leap into the air in delight.

It was enough for the Australians, even though they had to survive a late Spanish barrage after Tim Brand was shown a five-minute yellow card, reducing them to 10 men for the dying stages.
The victory leaves them on a perfect six points after their two matches, with Spain and Ireland, their nearest chasers on three apiece after the Irish defeated South Africa 4-1 in the other group C match
The Kookaburras will next face South Africa on Thursday, while the Hockeyroos, who've won one and lost one so far, will continue their campaign in the women's World Cup in Amstelveen, Netherlands, with a group A tie against winless Chile on Wednesday morning.
