Goa: Court orders two months jail term for theft accused

PANAJI: A North Goa court has convicted a 34-year-old man from Hubbali, Karnataka who was caught red-handed while running away with the bag of a beach reveller at Calangute beach on May 1 this year.

After he pleaded guilty to theft under Section 379 of the IPC, he was sentenced to two months imprisonment.

The case of the prosecution was that he was caught while running away with the bag of a beach goer which was kept on the shore, near the lifeguard tower at Calangute beach.. The bag contained two mobile phones and wallets worth Rs 25,000.

He was in judicial custody and chargesheet was furnished to him, and he decided to plead guilty.

"Considering the above and considering the nature of the offence, and that the accused is the sole bread winner in his family, and that he is of young age, some leniency can be shown in the matter of sentence," the court stated.

Section 379 is punishable with imprisonment of three years or with fine or with both.

The period of sentence undergone between May 1 and June 1 will be set off.
