GMI Construction wins brief to build £24m student flats

GMI Construction has been appointed to develop a £24 million student accommodation scheme in Birmingham. The project will see the redevelopment of a currently underused, former BT brownfield site in Stirchley to create a managed residence.

It will comprise a mix of cluster beds and single occupancy studio rooms for 167 students, together with a reception and communal areas.

Designed by Birmingham-based practice Glenn Howells Architects, construction of the development in Dogpool Lane is expected to begin in August and be ready in time for the 2023/24 academic year.

GMI has been appointed by Alumno Group, the specialist developer of student accommodation which previously built the No1 City Locks next to the Birmingham City University campus in the city's Eastside district.

Andy Bruce, GMI's divisional managing director for the Midlands, said: "GMI and Alumno enjoy a long standing and successful relationship, with this project serving as the third development we have undertaken together further to projects in Leeds and Manchester.

"This development has been expertly designed to be sympathetic to the local built environment while providing much-needed accommodation for the growing number of students choosing to study in Birmingham."

Alumno's managing director David Campbell added: "We are very happy to have appointed GMI to develop this site in Dogpool Road which will improve the local area visually, provide an economic boost to local businesses, and deliver much-needed accommodation for Birmingham's growing student population."
