GMB visit deserted Liverpool Airport as travel uncertainty rolls on

A GMB reporter described Liverpool airport as "depressing" this morning, as the once bustling airport was eerily quiet.

Report Nick Dixon was at Liverpool John Lennon Airport this morning and described the scene to Susanna Reid and Adil Ray back in the studio.

He said: "I've seen very few staff this morning, the coffee shop has got the shutters closed, I've only seen one flight checking in this morning and that's heading off to Belfast.

"It really is a depressing sight."

According to the airport's website, there are also flights going to Faro in Portugal and the Isle of Man this morning.

Nick said there was "potentially some light at the end of the tunnel" under rumoured government plans.

Currently people travelling to amber list countries have to quarantine for ten days on their return to the UK.

But the government is considering offering quarantine free travel for those who have been fully vaccinated, from potentially as early as July 19.

Yesterday Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed that the plans are something that the government is "working on".

Mr Hancock said: "When I'm in a position to be able to say something then we will do.

"But it's absolutely something we're working on and it's something I want to see."

The Health Secretary said the government was "working on plans to essentially allow the vaccine to bring back some of the freedoms that have had to be restricted to keep people safe".

He added: "After all, that's the whole purpose of the vaccination programme, that's why it's so important that every adult goes out and gets the jab."
