GMB's Dr Hilary warns new 'rapid 'Covid tests could provide 'false negative results'

Good Morning Britain's medical expert Dr Hilary Jones shared his concerns with the newly announced 30-minute Covid tests.

On Wednesday. Public Health England and the University of Oxford told how the Lateral Flow Tests are 99.6% accurate, and can detect the bug even in those not exhibiting symptoms.

The tests were also said to be a "game changer" in the ongoing battle against the deadly virus.

They are able to process swabs without the need for laboratory equipment, most delivering results within the space of half an hour.

But Dr Hilary has his doubts, explaining to Susanna Reid and Ben Shepherd that we need to be "careful" with how news of the tests is reported.

Dr Hilary warned that the tests may give 'false negatives' (ITV)

"I think it’s good we have rapid tests," he remarked, "in fact we have always had rapid tests, they just haven't been very reliable.

"Even these rapid tests, as attractive as they seem to be, only pick up 75% of people who are asymptomatic.

"Which means that one in four people who are carrying the virus could have no symptoms, could be passing the test, a false negative if you like and transmitting the virus to other people."

He added: "I think that while it's going to have its uses, I think we are going to have to be really careful and this idea that people can flock back to the theatre after having a quick £5 test – think about the logistics of that.

"How are you going to test 1,000 people, who is going to be doing those tests?" he asked.

Dr Hilary also addressed the UK's Covid death toll, which rose above 50,000 this week.

"We are seeing more deaths in the second wave – worse than other countries in Europe," he said.

"We have made a number of mistakes but there are good things we have done."

Health chiefs have said the new tests are ready to be rolled out to the community.

Health Minister Lord Bethell said: "We are absolutely committed to using the latest testing technology to make asymptomatic testing available in more areas.

"It is right we've taken a dual-track approach to evaluating this technology – by piloting them in the field so we can understand how to best to make these tests available, and by getting our world-leading academics and clinicians to undertake rigorous evaluation of their ability to detect the virus.

"I'm delighted that both are already demonstrating that lateral flow tests can be the reliable, highly sensitive technology we need to help get this virus under control, and return to as close to normality as possible."
