GMB: Coronavirus survivor reveals what it's like to be in intensive care

A coronavirus survivor has revealed what it's like to be in intensive care on Good Morning Britain.

Matt Dockray, 39, from Buckinghamshire spoke to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid live from his home about his experience in an intensive care unit.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was hospitalised and taken to the intensive care unit of St Thomas' Hospital in London after his condition worsened last night.

He remains conscious and his condition remains unchanged, the Mirror Online reports.

Matt was discharged from the hospital three weeks after first falling ill and contracting Covid-19.

Talking about his time in intensive care, Matt said: "It was a horrendous experience.

"I know a lot of doctors are trained for this and they go through this but for the patient as an individual it's one of the most horrible experiences you'll go through because you're fighting for yourself to get all the oxygen you need."

Piers then asked Matt if there was a moment when he thought he wasn't going to make it.

He admitted: "Yeah. It kicked in when the doctors started talking about putting my on a ventilator and explaining it was for support and not treatment.

"They explained that it gives you a chance to survive but it's quite clear that you progressively get worse and worse as this thing takes hold of you.

"So all you can think in your head is, you've got worse for three weeks, how are you going to get better if all you've got is some oxygen and there's no injection or quick cure.

"So, there was a point where you start to lose hope and think that's it."

In the UK, there are 51,608 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 5,373 people have sadly died, according to the latest Public Health England figures.
