Global Market: Barclays posts robust H1 results, raises guidance on investment banking momentum

Barclays reported a 17% rise in first-half profit, surpassing analysts' expectations, as strong equities trading and investment banking activity helped the British lender capitalize on buoyant global markets, according to Reuters.

The bank posted a profit before tax of £6.1 billion for the January-June period, ahead of analysts' consensus estimate of around £5.94 billion.

Barclays also announced a £1 billion share buyback, exceeding market expectations of approximately £831 million, signaling confidence in its capital position and future earnings prospects.

The lender raised its full-year income guidance to £31.5 billion, up from its previous forecast of £31 billion, and said it remains on track to achieve its strategic performance targets for 2026.

A key contributor to the strong results was Barclays' investment banking division, which continues to distinguish the lender from more domestically focused UK peers. According to Reuters, the investment bank generated £4 billion in total income during the second quarter, comfortably above analysts' expectations of £3.7 billion.

Equities trading was a major driver of performance, with revenue from the business climbing 45% year over year in the second quarter. Reuters reported that while the growth was substantial, it trailed the performance of major Wall Street banks, which posted an average 69% increase in equities trading revenue during the period, supported by elevated market activity and robust dealmaking.

Barclays has continued to benefit from stronger client activity in capital markets and advisory businesses this year, reinforcing the importance of its investment banking franchise as a key earnings engine.

The upbeat earnings, higher income outlook and larger-than-expected share buyback underscore the bank's confidence in sustaining momentum despite an uncertain macroeconomic environment.
