Global coronavirus cases hit 5million with more than 320,000 confirmed Covid-19 deaths

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases across the world now exceeds five million, the latest figures show.

The grim milestone was reached this morning according to data collected by John Hopkins University.

The global death toll now stands at more than 329,000.

Over the past week, Latin America has overtaken the US and Europe in reporting the highest proportion of new daily cases.

A large number of those came from Brazil, which recently surpassed the UK, Germany and France in having the world's third-biggest outbreak behind the US and Russia.

The first 41 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Wuhan, China, on January 10.

The world hit its first one million cases on April 1.

Since then, around a million new cases are reported every two weeks, a Reuters tally has found.
