Glentoran fans camp outside Oval overnight to get Boxing Day tickets

Glentoran fans have been braving the December chill to get their hands on Boxing Day tickets.

The Glens host Linfield on Thursday in one of the most eagerly anticipated Big Two derbies in recent times.

The Blues sit top of the Premiership, just five points ahead of fifth-placed Glentoran in what is building into one of the most exciting title races in years.

And the fans are lapping up the hype and excitement.

Around 6,500 of them will attend Thursday's derby at the Oval - health and safety restricting the number of supporters who can fill into the East Belfast stadium.

Tickets have been like gold dust since they went on sale, with the last batch being snapped up on Christmas Eve morning.

They went on sale at 9am at the Oval, but there were fans sitting outside the ground from as early as 7pm on Monday night.

"We had one fan called Paul Sterling who camped out from about 7pm last night, which shows you the demand there has been," said Glentoran media director Ian Clarke.

"Midfielder John Herron saw Paul's story on social media and offered to buy the tickets for him.

"There is also a guy I know from Macclesfield who arrived home to Northern Ireland on the boat from Stranraer at 11pm last night.

"He came straight to the Oval after dropping some people off to sit out from about 3am this morning.

"We had an additional 28 tickets go on sale this mornng. They were tickets that our season ticket holders hadn't redeemed."

Ian added: "The demand has been incredible, and it is fantastic to see.

"That guy from Macclesfield arrived in the early hours of the morning, and he was the fourth in the queue.

"It is great dedication from the supporters who just want to be at the Boxing Day game.

"Boxing Day derbies are always special occasions, and this one will be no different."
