Glen weigh up options over 16 man All-Ireland decider finale

MALACHY O’Rourke said he couldn’t speak for the Glen club - but he indicated an appeal against Kilmacud Crokes having 16 men on the field for the final play of today’s All-Ireland final was unlikely.

Crokes’ Dara Mullin was on the goaline for Danny Tallon’s late 45, when he should have been off the field after being substituted.

Video footage shows Kilmacud have 16 players on the field as Glen chase a late winning goal.

The play culminated in a Conleth McGuckian effort tailing wide as Crokes held on for a 1-11 to 1-9 victory to claim their third All-Ireland title.

The GAA rulebook (6.44) states that the penalty for the offence of exceeding the allowed number of players - if proven - is forfeiture of the game, a replay or a fine.

GAA chiefs have the power to intervene but are expected to await the referee’s report and it is unclear if Glen will appeal.

“We can do nothing about that (16 men on the field) but it obviously does make a difference,” said Glen boss O’Rourlke

“The more men they have in there, the harder it is for us to get a score out of it. I think we did ask the fourth official to get the free retaken but it didn’t happen.”

Asked if the club had an appetite to lodge an objection, O’Rourke said: “I can’t speak for the club or anything else but I don’t think that’s how the club operates.

“We had our chances. We gave it our best shot. Look it, that shouldn’t happen. I can’t speak for the club but I just think we’ll accept we got beat on the day.”

Crokes’ boss Robbie Brennan said: “I think Dara Mullin was coming off - at 14.

“I think he was just taking his time to be honest with you. Probably that oul cynical word of killing the clock, so he was always coming (off).

“There was just the linesman said he’s not off yet, so wait, wait, wait.

“That’s all we are kind of aware of on it at the minute.”
