Glastonbury cancellation lost festival £5m as organiser Emily Eavis reveals true cost

The Glastonbury cancellation cost the festival five million.

Organiser Emily Eavis, who runs the famous festival with her dad Michael, lifted the lid on the eye-watering sum the festival lost.

Speaking on Shaun Keaveny’s Wednesday BBC Radio 6 Music show, the organiser guru explained the losses were "very, very difficult" for Glastonbury.

She said: "Yeah no doubt about it. It was very difficult for us over that period. The cost of cancelling cost us five million pounds which is what we lost.

"As a festival, we don't have a massive back up. We don't have that to lose. It was very, very difficult."

Behind the scenes, Emily revealed the event organisers have been giving the 2022 event in the calendar everything they have got.

"We are gunna throw everything at 2022," she said.

"I feel now different place to where we were a year ago the light is coming in we're able to move out of this awkward time."

While the usual five-day event can't go ahead this year, they have two upcoming special events.

This weekend their streaming event Live at Worthy Farm will be without a live audience.

However, they have headlining acts Coldplay, George Ezra and Damon Albarn taking to the stage.

Also, it's emerged the festival were granted one special day for a crowd of 50,000 people in September but there will be no campsite.

Mendip council gave the event the green light.

Emily said: "It has been great. We have got out crew back. Everyone's working on the site. It's been raining and sunny this week. We've had all conditions which everyone is enjoying, even the rain seems exciting.

"It's a good feeling. This project is massively ambitious."
