Glasgow woman graduates from Strathclyde where course leader was also her P6 teacher

A Glasgow woman had the unusual experience of having the same teacher in primary school and at university.

Charlene McKechnie received her BA (Hons) in Primary Education from the University of Strathclyde under the course leadership of Robert Collins who previously taught her in P6 at St Brendan’s Primary in Yoker.

Charlene said she vividly remembers winning a Science, Technology & Engineering competition with Mr Collins in June 1999.

After being presented with her degree at Barony Hall, she was presented with a framed news story about the 1999 competition.

In a message to Mr Collins, she said: “I was completely overwhelmed with your kind words and will be forever thankful for your belief in me and helping me make it to the end!

“I can’t thank the University enough for continually believing in me…(I) was always 100% committed to finishing the journey I started almost six years ago.”

Senior Teaching Fellow Mr Collins added: “Charlene is one of many students to have been welcomed into teacher education via the widening access route and throughout her studies, she has maintained exceptional commitment and optimism.

“She was presented with the framed in recognition of her resilient character and professionalism.”
