Glasgow wine bars worth visiting this National Drink Wine Day

Friday February 18 marks National Drink Wine Day, which gives you an excuse to wind-down after a hectic work week with a glass or two of red, white, rose or whatever takes your fancy.

We may live in the homeland of whisky and as Glaswegians there's little denying we do love a good pint, but there's no doubt, wine is very high on our drinks lists too.

Gone are the days where a good wine bar would be considered something of a novelty in Glasgow - in 2022 our city is blessed with an abundance of cosy spots home to a vast selection of wines from across the world.

So to celebrate National Drink Wine Day, we thought we'd put together a list of top Glasgow wine spots you should consider kicking back in this weekend.

And we'd love to have your suggestions too - make sure you share your favourite Glasgow wine bar in the comments.

Marchtown

This gem of a neighbourhood wine bar, located on Pollokshaws Road in Strathbungo has gained incredible popularity for its varied wine selection, but particularly the service of the staff. If you're unsure what to go for, they'll ask you for your likes and dislikes before suggesting the perfect bottle.

Marchtown also operates as a wine shop too, which was much needed for many during lockdown.

Zinfandel

Another Strathbungo wine bar with a loyal following, Zinfandel might not be known by many outside of the south side - but it should be.

The beautiful family-run Croatian and Scottish fushion gastro bar specialises in introducing its guests to wines they will like likely have never tried before from the likes of Croatia itself, Herzegovina and other lesser known wine regions. Dishes from their small plates menu serve as the perfect wine accompaniment.

Bar Brett

Bar Brett relaunched after lockdown last year with a whole new team - including a Michelin-trained chef from Hong Kong.

However, despite the changes, one constant remains the same - great natural wines, excellent service and the perfect ambience for unwinding on a Friday night.

The chef's special yakitori chicken is an absolute must-order too.

Sylvan

We've been raving about this place since it opened last year - and we're not the only ones.

Another natural wine bar, you'll often find the Woodlands Road spot stowed out on a Friday night.

Sylvan has fast earned a reputation as one of the city's most exciting vegetarian food restaurants too, while they even have a sideline in selling fantastic vegetarian-friendly cheeses.

Vroni's

Vroni's has stood the test of time in Glasgow city centre - and for good reason.

Self-described as 'Glasgow's favourite wine bar', the West Nile Street oozes character and that bit of old-world charm, providing the perfect atmosphere for sipping on a glass of red or perhaps popping open a bottle of champagne.

Tabac

Perennial date destination and effortlessly cool Tabac was so popular by late 2019 that they had to expand - with a similarly stylish organic wine and aperitivo bar.

Offering a "large selection of vegan, organic and biodynamic wines", Tabac is another drinking spot attempting to explore the lesser renowned wine regions by importing in bottles from the likes of Romania and Hungary.

Of course, if wine isn't your thing, the brilliantly talented bartenders in the main Tabac bar will conjure you up one of their carefully crafted cocktails just a stone's throw away.

Hooligan

Another Glasgow bar specialising in natural wine and small plates dining, it's all about the presentation in this west end spot, which looks like it's been plucked out of a high-end design magazine.

But it's not a case of style over substance at Hooligan. An extensive wine list, from weighty reds to lively whites seamlessly combines with the delicious and diverse food on offer, making it an incredibly attractive food and drink destination.

Hooligan, 1 Lynedoch Street, G3 6EF

Bar Vini

Bar Vini brings a little slice of Italy to the south side, perfectly blending authentic Italian cuisine with a comprehensive selection of flavourful wines.

A quick look at some of the wonderfully fresh pasta dishes and antipasti options on the Bar Vini Instagram page will have your mouth watering, while they often take to social media to showcase their latest bottles of wine.

As with Tabac, the cocktails in here - such as classic but expertly made negroni - might avert your eyes away from the wine list.
