Glasgow traffic chaos as M8 forced to close amid ongoing incident

An ongoing incident has forced the closure of the M8 motorway in Glasgow.

All motorway traffic is being held westbound after Junction 22 (Plantation) due the incident, which took place between J23 (Dumbreck) and Junction 24 (Helen Street).

Traffic Scotland issued an alert around 2:20pm this afternoon via Twitter, advising Glasgow drivers to consider an alternative route and allow extra time for their journeys.

They tweeted: M8 W/B now CLOSED after J22 due to ongoing RTC J23 - 24. Please consider an alternative route and allow extra time for your journey."

However, the exact nature of the incident remains unclear at this time.

Meanwhile an alert by traffic information site INRIX reads: "All traffic being temporarily held, two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M8 Westbound from J21 M74 J1 to J24 Helen Street (Govan / Helen Street).

"Westbound carriageway is blocked. Lanes one and two(of four) are closed."

Heavy congestion is being reported from Junction 20 of the M74 and on the M77 southbound to Junction 1.

A diversion for drivers is in place on the M77 southbound.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at an incident on the M8 near to Junction 23 westbound, Govan, Glasgow, to which police were called around 2.05pm today, Sunday, 9 January, 2022. No further details at this time.

"The M8 westbound is closed prior to Junction 23 and traffic is being diverted via at the M8/M77 junction. Local diversions are in place."
