Glasgow support worker may be forced to give up job as son's nursery set to close

A Glasgow mum has been having sleepless nights after being told her four-year-old son's nursery will be closing down in a few months.

Support worker Jessica fears she'll need to give up her job to take care of her child after Little Scholars Nursery, located within the Langside campus at Glasgow Clyde College, told parents they won't be open beyond July.

It's understood that the current manager is retiring.

The 35-year-old mum has contacted numerous nurseries across Glasgow only to be told there are no spaces available until 2024/2025.

With the increase in the cost of living, Jessica, who lives in the south side, says it would be difficult for the family to survive on her partner's salary alone.

She told Glasgow Live: "It’s a very serious situation and impossible to find another nursery in the south side or anywhere in Glasgow.

"If there’s no nursery for my son then I can’t work. We are immigrants and don’t have family here to help us.

"I have phoned a lot of nurseries and dropped by to ask about spaces and everybody says there’s no space until 2024/2025, it’s crazy.

"I am so stressed and can’t sleep at night. It’s a huge problem and I don't know how to manage it.

"My son has a lot of friends from the nursery and is very happy to go there. It’s very difficult to keep him at home because he enjoys going to nursery so it will be a huge problem for him.

"They only told us two months in advance and it’s short notice, it’s not good enough. We would’ve appreciated it if they told us a year before and gave us time to find another nursery."

Glasgow Clyde College said the nursery is operated by an independent contractor who have been leasing their building.

A spokesperson for the college said: “Little Scholars Nursery is a privately owned nursery provider and they currently lease a building on the Langside Campus of Glasgow Clyde College.

"The owner of Little Scholars Nursery has indicated to the College that the business will be closing at the end of July 2023.

“The College is committed to engaging a new private provider to operate childcare and education services on the campus and a number of interested parties have already contacted the College to register an interest in opening a Nursery within the building0.

“The College is currently discussing how best to bring the opportunity to take over the lease of the building to the open market in a fair and transparent manner and hopes to be in a position to progress this matter as soon a possible.”

Little Scholars Nursery have been contacted for comment.
