Glasgow St Enoch Centre plans for 1700 homes, hotel and rooftop garden move forward

Plans to transform Glasgow's St Enoch Centre to include 1,700 new homes and a hotel have been moved forward.

The new masterplan will see the shopping and leisure space revitalised, creating quality office space to include the former Debenhams building, adding a four-star hotel, up to 1,700 homes and a rooftop garden. It's hoped it will future-proof the existing shopping centre over the next 20 years.

Following consultation with the public and with Glasgow City Council, the proposals have been amended to include widened streets, increased daylight, a public square and increased break-out space, which can be viewed on St. Enoch Centre website.

Owner Sovereign Centros say they are working with Glasgow City Council to develop the site.

A scoping request has been lodged with planners outlining the long-term vision for the site with a formal planning application being prepared. It's expected to go in front of a committee in spring 2022.

Any comments and suggestions can be submitted to a dedicated masterplan email address at stenochmasterplan@bigpartnership.co.uk.

Guy Beaumont, Director at Sovereign Centros, said: “We are excited by our vision for St. Enoch Centre and how we can future-proof and enhance it.

"We are at the beginning of a long journey and consultation and engagement is hugely important to us. Over the last few months, we have carried out detailed and extensive engagement with a variety of city centre stakeholders, Glasgow City Council and of course, the local community. We have welcomed all feedback and many of our conversations have focused on the importance of inclusivity, connectivity and the need for well-considered public space.

"Based on this valued consultation we have enhanced our proposals and we are keen to share the latest updates before we submit our planning application.”

It is anticipated the development would be brought forward in a number of phases over 15 to 20 years.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We are working with our partners in the private, public and academic sectors to create a city centre that is as attractive a place as possible in which to live, work, study, visit and invest.

"The city centre is now undergoing change as it faces new challenges and prepares to take new opportunities, and we welcome any proposal that shows the continued investor confidence in the future of the area, and can help in our economic renewal."
