Glasgow school in shock and 'deep sorrow' after teacher found dead at Govan home

A Glasgow school community has been rocked by the sudden death of one of their 'beloved' members of staff who was found dead inside her Govan home on Tuesday, April 25.

Marelle Sturrock, who worked at Sandwood Primary School, in Penilee, was found dead at around 8.40am after police officers attended her home on Jura Street.

We previously reported how concerns were raised after the 35-year-old failed to show up for work and friends were unable to get a response from the expectant mum when they went to check on her.

Police Scotland last night (April 26) confirmed that the pregnant teacher's death is being treated as 'suspicious'.

Detectives searching for a missing man over eight miles away at Mugdock Country Park in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, said his presence is "linked" to the death of Marelle.

Head Teacher at Sandwood Primary School, Fiona Donnelly penned a letter to parent's informing them of the tragic news.

In the letter, she advised mums and dads to speak with their little ones and said support will also be available at the school.

She wrote: "It is with deep sorrow that I must inform you about the sudden death of Ms Sturrock who is a beloved member of our teaching staff.

"I know that this will come as a shock to our school community, and we will do all that we can to support children, staff and families through what will be a difficult and challenging time.

"We have had support in school today (April 26) from our Educational Psychologists who will be here over the next few days to offer help and advice.

"I hope that you will understand that there are no other details that I can share at this time but wanted to let our families know the tragic news from the school.

"Please can I ask that you speak to your child about this news at home, in a way in which you would normally deal with sensitive issues as you know your children best.

"Please contact the school office if you need any support regarding this matter. Our Educational Psychologists are happy to offer advice and guidance on this. Further information about coping with Loss and Bereavement will be posted on our app for your information.

Police will remain at Mugdock Country Park as part of their investigations (Robert Perry)

"We will of course provide support for our pupils during this difficult time."

Police continue searching Mugdock Country Park as part of their enquiries and re-iterated there is 'no risk to the wider public'.

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Kelly said: “Our thoughts are with Marelle’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“We are providing her family with support at this incredibly difficult time as our investigation to establish the full circumstances continues.

“A visible police presence will remain at both locations as our work continues.

“There is not believed to be any risk to the wider public but I would urge anyone with information or concerns to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 0904 of 25 April or speak to any of our officers.”
