Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital must be open with us all over scandal

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow has been marred by scandal since opening in 2015.

In 2019, a damning investigation into the water supply found “widespread contamination”.

Two years later, an independent review concluded that 84 children were infected with rare bacteria while undergoing treatment.

The sad fact is the QEUH should not have opened when it did – a delay could have fixed many of the subsequent problems.

Staff across the NHS do a sterling job and the workers at the QEUH are no exception.

Budgets have been tight in recent years and employees have performed admirably in difficult circumstances.

But QEUH bosses have blatantly failed on a number of fronts, particularly on transparency.

As we reveal today, Louise Slorance has alleged that the hospital deliberately concealed information about her husband Andrew’s death.

She says she was not told about a deadly infection mentioned in his medical notes.

These claims not only raise serious questions about safety, but also about openness.

Families should be given as much information as possible about loved ones.

Andrew’s case comes two years after the Record exposed the Milly Main scandal at the same hospital.

Ten-year-old Milly was a cancer patient who passed away at the QEUH but her family was not told about an infection “probably” caused by the hospital environment.

The tragedy is now the subject of a criminal investigation.

The NHS is famous for putting people first but too many citizens have been kept in the dark at the QEUH.

Gogglebox has Scot to change

CHANNEL 4’s Gogglebox is part of the nation’s furniture because it feels, looks and sounds like our own living rooms and our own lives.

Except, that is, for viewers in Scotland.

There have been scant Scottish sofa reviewers of TV programming recorded as they eat, bicker, watch and comment.

After MPs on the Scottish Affairs committee brought up the lack of Scottish accents on the programme, Channel 4 listened.

It is only right that the programme commissioners have accepted there is a deficit and have launched a hunt for a distinctively Scottish family to join the league of nations that makes up Gogglebox.

Gogglebox is great fun and a mirror of who we are.

But don’t all rush to the front for five minutes of fame – and remember to give the living room a spring clean first.
