Glasgow's latest covid case numbers as Nicola Sturgeon prepares to make statement in parliament

Nicola Sturgeon is scheduled to make a covid statement in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday.

She's expected to brief MSPs on the latest case numbers as the vaccine booster programme is ramped up across the country amid concern for the new Omicron variant.

The Scottish Government revealed today that 2,067 new cases of the virus were confirmed in the last 24 hours, with one new death recorded.

Meanwhile in Glasgow numbers remain relatively stable with 265 positive tests recorded for every 100,000 people living in the city, below the national average of 335.

Carmyle and Mount Vernon South, Knightswood West, Parkhead East and Braidfauld North, and Sighthill reported the lowest levels, with so few fresh cases the number can't be recorded.

The highest rates were recorded in Drumchapel North, Robroyston and Millerston, Blackhill and Barmulloch East, Baillieston West, Barmulloch, Carmunnock South, Cranhill Lightburn and Queenslie South, Baillieston East, Darnley West, Darnley North, Dowanhill, Muirend and Old Cathcart, Nitshill, Carnwadric East, Dalmarnock, Pollok South and West, Balornock and Summerston North - with more than 400 new cases per 100,000 population.

The government confirmed on Friday a further increase in the number of Omicron cases, revealing some have been linked to a Steps concert at Glasgow Hydro last month.

The First Minister explained: "The number of Omicron cases now being reported in Scotland is rising, and cases are no longer all linked to a single event, but to several different sources including a Steps concert at the Hydro on November 22. This confirms our view that there is now community transmission of this variant within Scotland.

"Given the nature of transmission we would expect to see cases rise - perhaps significantly - in the days ahead. However, health protection teams are continuing work through contact tracing, isolation and testing to slow the spread as far as possible while we learn more about the new variant’s impact.

"Ministers are also keeping the situation under daily review."
