Sunday Times Best Places to Live: Glasgow reacts to Dennistoun being named in Scotland list

Dennistoun has been named as one of the best places to live in the country.

The Sunday Times revealed their best places to live in Scotland today and a couple of Glasgow areas got a namecheck - Dennistoun and Bearsden.

The shout out for the east end neighbourhood comes hot on the heels of Dennistoun being heralded as the eighth-coolest neighbourhood in the world, as anointed by Time Out magazine last year. Then, it was described as a "secluded island" just out of Glasgow City centre.

And Glasgow Live readers have been sharing their reaction to Dennistoun's latest title today.

After sharing the story on Facebook, David Russell said: "Someone's having a laugh", while Sohail K Hayat added: "that's shocking actually."

Marie Comrie was similarly surprised, commenting: "Seriously!? Sorry don’t see it myself. Wouldn’t be in my top 10 and I live in the east end".

Christopher Maxwell simply said: "This is a lie."

However, local residents greeted the news with open arms, and used the opportunity to talk about their pride their neighbourhood.

Paula Gilberthorpe described Dennistoun as the "best place ever", while Jeanette Cairns pointed to a Dennistoun celebrity and said: "Lulu must have put in a good word. She can be proud of her roots now."

The Sunday Times Best Places to Live is a list of eight locations across Scotland chosen by The Sunday Times to represent the best of Britain in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

This year's winner for the whole of Scotland was North Berwick.

Expert judges behind the guide assess a wide range of factors, from schools, air quality, transport and broadband speeds to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street.

Here's what the judges had to say about the best places to live in Glasgow.

Dennistoun

The judges said this up-and-coming corner of the East End combines a youthful edge with a respect for Glasgow tradition. Alexandra Park is the beating heart of the area, meeting place for a menagerie of dogs and their walkers, with a wild stretch where you can feel as if you’re not in the city at all (as long as you can ignore the hum of cars on the M8 Motorway). Dennistoun’s cultural cachet exploded last year when Time Out magazine declared it the eighth-coolest neighbourhood in the world.

Average house price: £147,000

Average rental: £750 pcm

Bearsden

The judges said Glasgow’s premier suburb of Bearden has shown it has more strings to its bow than big houses, good exam results and 20-minute train journey to the city centre. The surrounding countryside has been a godsend during lockdown, whether it’s walking the dog in the Kilpatrick Hills or riding a bike around picturesque Kilmardinny Loch.

Average house price: £272,500

Average rental: £895 pcm
