Glasgow Extinction Rebellion protest blocked by police as city centre traffic halted

A huge COP26 Extinction Rebellion protest has been blocked from heading towards the climate conference by police in Glasgow.

The COP26 protest was halted by officers on Sauchiehall Street with activists stopped from crossing Renfield Street.

In images captured on the scene, a line of police officers can be seen walking towards the protesters in a line, forcing them back down Sauchiehall Street.

The Extinction Rebellion 'Green Wash' march began at 1pm this afternoon, having set off from outside the Buchanan Galleries.

According to the XR Warwick District, who are currently in attendance at the march, international performance activist troupe Red Rebel Brigade have managed to make it past the police cordon.

One eyewitness on Twitter has warned that traffic has been halted on West George Street, Bath Street and West Nile Street and that officers on horseback have arrived on the scene to control the crowds of protesters.

There are currently traffic delays due to the demonstration along with congestion to local roads around Buchanan Galleries Shopping Centre and Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central Train Stations as motorists try to avoid the area.

Although the demonstration is confined to Sauchiehall Street at the moment, the large police presence in the area is causing delays across the city centre.

Up to 100,000 people are expected to take part in rallies again this weekend across the city from Friday with significant road closures in place.
