Glasgow parents fuming over 'mingin', wrecked and disgraceful' playpark

Furious Glasgow parents are protesting over the closure and 'mingin, wrecked and disgraceful' state of a life-line playpark.

Crowds are expected to gather at Queen's Park in the south side at 12pm on Saturday to demand answers from the council over the alleged condition of the north play area.

Organisers claim equipment is 'unsafe' with some items 'beyond repair' and that there is 'no inclusive play equipment for disabled children'.

As of this week it was revealed that the park was closed amid 'health and safety' concerns.

A petition has also been launched, with over 1,200 signatures so far.

A statement on the online petition read: "Queen's Park is a flagship park used by the communities of Shawlands, Strathbungo, Govanhill, Battlefield, Langside and Pollokshields to name a few. There are currently many pieces of unsafe play equipment in the Queen's Park north play area . Equipment is patched up or removed when beyond repair.

"Aside from urgent repairs, there is poor separation of equipment by age group. Toddlers, primary school pupils and teenagers use the same equipment.

"There is no inclusive play equipment for disabled children. For children under three, there are no safe climbing structures or chutes. The surfacing is also in poor condition and needs replaced.

"Glasgow City Council have an additional £1.5m parks and open spaces funding for the coming financial year from the Scottish Government. If pro-rata allocation for Southside Central is similar to last year, that would be around £70,000.

"We want this spent on resurfacing and new play equipment in Queen's Park."

Local parents slammed the park as a 'disgrace' and a 'shambles' and said the council 'should be ashamed' as they fight for answers.

One wrote: This playground supports hundreds of children who don’t have their own gardens. Take one look at our park compared to Roukenglen and that sums up GCC.

"Glasshouse play provision is gone and the play park is a disgrace.

Another added: "I’m in this playpark pretty much every day with my two pre-schoolers. They especially love the basket swings, one broken, one almost broken, the slides, and bouncing on the mini-trampolines.

"Last summer the mini-trampolines had broken springs and another parent and I fixed them ourselves having failed to get anywhere with the council for several weeks. Now they’ve both been wrecked and snapped by selfish types who are too big and heavy to use them.

"Given the number of people who use it, it could do with being 50 per cent larger. Also, why did they remove the bins? The place is mingin' now because some people can’t be a***d going out of the play area to find a bin."

A third posted: "Queen's Park is our local playground and in desperate need of improvement. The playground is very popular but very tired.

"Several bits of equipment are broken and very worn. Queen's Park has such great potential it is a shame it isn't being allowed to shine as it should for the community.

"The equipment itself is not inclusive for children of disabilities."

Another commented: "This park could be amazing for children. It is in a perfect spot.

"Instead it is a dangerous eyesore. If there are funds available please upgrade this park."

A fifth wrote: "So many families rely on the park and a proper play area should be a priority in this area. It makes me sad that our children are forced to play on old, broken equipment."

Another posted: "The play area in Queens Park is a shambles and there are so many children and parents who could benefit from it being upgraded."

While one parent commented: "The park has been left to degrade. So many of the local residents don’t have access to gardens or play equipment.

"It serves a huge community yet is routinely broken or unsafe. Time and time again equipment is falling apart and inadequate fencing is erected.

"For an area with so many children and young families the council should be ashamed at the lack of provision and inaccessibility."

Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
