Glasgow millennial, 32, on £50k a year shares how she saves money each month

A woman living outside Glasgow has shared a sneak peak into her life as a tax adviser who is currently earning £50,000.

Living with her boyfriend and two cats, the woman says she started off living in London for nine months having been accepted to a graduate programme with a Big Four accountancy firm back in 2012 and after the nine-month period passed, she joined the Glasgow office and continues to work there.

Speaking to Refinery29, the 32-year old admits she is "extremely lucky" and makes more money than her partner.

Although they split the bills, she says she tries to "pay for all household repairs and food" as well as saving some money each month but is a firm believer in the saying "here for a good time and not a long time'" and will use her credit card if she wants something.

After PAYE, NIC, pension and charitable donations, her monthly salary comes to £2,882.99.

The woman explains that her housing costs come to £450 which covers her half of the mortgage, utilities, TV licence, internet, council tax, home insurance, TV subscriptions as well as cat insurance.

In addition to this, she contributes £180 a month to her pension and has no outstanding loan payments.

In terms of savings, the advisor says she has £20,000 in an ISA, £500 personal savings, a £60 in a fund for the cats to cover things such as food and litter.

Other costs include her phone bill (£38), gym membership (£85), Cineworld pass (£16), professional subscriptions (£75), road tax (£11), cleaner for her gran (£22), petrol (£150) as well as a milk delivery costing £24.

Although she admits to having a comfortable lifestyle telling Refinery she "grew up in a family where money was never really an issue", she explains she was able to go on "holidays abroad two to three times a year and never went without anything."

Having been taught to take care of her own money, she admitted that she never became financially independent until she landed her first full-time job at the age of 22 and says her dad paid her mortgage until that moment. Before this, she worked in a chip shop at the age of 14.

She continued: "My friend worked there [chip shop] and got me the job. I had starting smoking so got the job to fund my cigarette habit (which I have now thankfully kicked) and to pay for going out at the weekend with friends.

"I moved out when I was 19. I bought a house using money that my mum had inherited when her mum passed away. My mum gave me £40k and when my sister was old enough to move out I re-mortgaged and gave her half of this. "

Thinking about money, she said she isn't worried about the financial side of her life explaining: "I make a good amount of money and have a decent amount of savings. I have stayed in the same two-bed house so I can easily afford all of the bills etc. on my own and still have some left over if needed.

"My partner lost his job last month so I cancelled my cleaner (£140 a month) and PT (£200 a month) to save a bit of money but hopefully I will be starting those up again soon."

When asked is she had ever received passive income, she said that she had.

Concluding she added: "I am extremely lucky. I received the deposit for my house (£20k my share), my dad bought my first car (£5k), I was given money towards university (£3k) and whenever I am doing any renovation in my house my dad always gives me £1k.

"I have probably had about £5k from him over the past five years. My dad and I spend a lot of time arguing about money (he keeps trying to give me money and I don’t want to take it) but I cave in most of the time as it isn’t worth fighting about."
