Glasgow drivers hit with 80,000 bus lane fines in 2021

A record number of fines were handed out to Scottish drivers caught in city bus lanes last year, new figures show - and Glasgow has the highest number in Scotland.

The total cost of those penalty charge notices (PCNs) was at least £11 million, despite traffic levels being drastically lower during the second year of lockdown.

Here in Glasgow, the figures show that 80,000 fines were issued in 2021 - ahead of Edinburgh (54,000) and Aberdeen (49,000).

The number of PCNs issued for bus lane misuse rose 30% from 2020, with the capital alone seeing a 60% increase in the number of fines.

Drivers in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, where enforcement cameras operate, may have been unaware of the new cameras that were installed over lockdown.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Bus gates, bus lanes and other bus priority measures help to improve journey times and make the bus a more attractive travel option in Glasgow.

Brian Gregory, policy director at the Alliance of British Drivers said: “There has been a significant proliferation of bus lane cameras which seems to have been accompanied by a proliferation of ambiguity of signage at bus lanes.”
