Glasgow cyclists to benefit from new bike parking racks in George Square

New cycle parking racks are to replace parking spaces in George Square to encourage active travel into the city centre by commuters.

Twenty racks will be installed on George Square (south) and Hanover Street as part of the Glasgow City Council's Spaces For People programme, which is providing extra space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of Covid-19.

They are part of a number of temporary infrastructure measures introduced across the city to encourage people to walk, wheel or cycle as lockdown restrictions are eased.

It follows on from the recent work to widen footways around George Square and close the square (east and west), Hanover Street and the North Hanover Street bus gate to traffic, as well the create sustainable transport corridors for buses, cycle and taxis on George Square south and Cochrane Street.

Pop-up cycle lanes have also been put in place along the Broomielaw, with more under construction on London Road, Gorbals Street and Great Western Road at Drumchapel.

It comes days as new temporary bus stops are being introduced in a total of 10 streets in the city centre as part of the Spaces For People programme to further enable social distancing.
